Medicare Prescription Payment Plan (M3P)

Beginning in 2025, you will have the option to pay your out-of-pocket (OOP) prescription drug costs in monthly installments over the course of the plan year, instead of paying OOP costs at the pharmacy.

This is called the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan (M3P).

The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan is a new payment option in the prescription drug law that works with your current drug coverage to help you manage your out-of-pocket Medicare Part D drug costs by spreading them across the calendar year (January–December). All plans offer this payment option and participation is voluntary.

  • If you opt into the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, you will pay $0 at the pharmacy for a covered Part D drug, instead of the OOP cost sharing you would normally pay when filling a prescription.
  • This payment option might help you manage your monthly expenses, but it doesn’t save you money or lower your drug costs.
  • Each month you’ll continue to pay your health or drug plan premium (if you have one), and you’ll get a bill from your plan to pay for your prescription drugs (instead of paying the pharmacy).
  • Participating in this payment option is voluntary, and it doesn’t cost anything to participate.

This payment option may not be the best choice for you if:

  • Your yearly drug costs are low.
  • Your drug costs are the same each month.
  • You’re considering signing up for the payment option late in the calendar year (after September).
  • You don’t want to change how you pay for your drugs.
  • You get or are eligible for Extra Help from Medicare.
  • You get or are eligible for a Medicare Savings Program.
  • You get help paying for your drugs from other organizations, like a State Pharmaceutical Assistance Program (SPAP), a coupon program, or other health coverage.

You can elect to join by calling 1-833-FC2-PLAN (1-833-322-7526), TTY: 711, 7 days a week from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (except Thanksgiving and Christmas) from October 1st through March 31st, and Monday to Friday (except holidays) from April 1st through September 30th.

“The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan is a voluntary program that allows you to spread your out-of-pocket costs for covered Part D drugs across the remaining months of the plan year. The program does not affect plan premiums, which are billed and should be paid separately. By opting in to the program, you (or your authorized representative) are indicating you understand these Medicare Prescription Payment Plan terms and conditions. You are agreeing to be financially responsible for all amounts billed under the program. If you do not pay the amounts due under the program you will be terminated from the program, and will not be allowed to opt in again until the amounts owed are repaid in full. You can choose to opt out of the program at any time, however any outstanding amounts owed will continue to be billed and must be paid.”
